Liberty Human Rights
Building a better online world for human rights
London, UK
- Six-year programme of digital projects, putting digital at the heart of Liberty’s mission
- Transformation from digitally cautious to digitally focused
- Worked together to transition to a specialist third sector agency
Liberty is the UK’s oldest civil liberties organisation, with more than 10,500 members. Liberty challenges injustice, defends freedom and campaigns to make sure everyone in the UK is treated fairly.
Liberty partnered with Cogapp in 2013 to develop a new Drupal website. The organisation needed to develop digital literacy skills, particularly around digital campaigning and social media.
Since then, we worked together on twenty digital projects until we helped Liberty transition to a specialist third sector agency, having identified that would be the best way for them to fulfil their mission.
Build a better online world for our clients
We’re pleased to leave Liberty in a significantly better place than when we started working together.
When we met the Liberty team, nobody had ‘digital’ in their job title, the @LibertyHQ twitter account wasn’t allowed to follow anyone, and the website did not prioritise crucial user journeys like Join and Donate.
Now, Liberty have a Digital Manager, are utilising digital campaigning tools, and everyone in the organisation recognises the vital role digital has for their campaigns.
Liberty rebranded in 2018. Shortly after this, we spoke to their Digital Manager and reflected on how far we had travelled together, and the best way for them to achieve their refocused mission. Our recommendation - with a heavy heart - was that a specialist third-sector agency would be better placed to get Liberty where they wanted to be. In 2020, Reason Digital took over Liberty’s digital output, and we wish them every success.
Creating an environment where everyone can do their best work
Working with Liberty has been a great privilege. Playing a part in helping Liberty increase their reach and impact across issues including surveillance, facial recognition, and Brexit has been rewarding for the Cogapp team.
We worked on campaigns with Don’t Panic, David Shrigley, and high profile campaigns like Save Our Human Rights Act.
Building a better online world for the people who use our work
Liberty is now able to confidently operate across digital, including social media and campaigning. This has increased reach with the public, whilst maintaining influence amongst lawmakers.
Website copy and campaign microsites we built have helped make complex issues easier to understand and the actions to be taken clearer and more meaningful. This has led to a huge increase in engagement with thousands of actions taken.
Leading our industry forward
Working with Liberty introduced us to a number of colleagues from across the digital sector who we’ve enjoyed sharing best practice with, including Engaging Networks, North, Thoughtworks, and Don’t Panic London.
