A Digital Partnership to Support the Conservation of Scotland's Magnificent Heritage

Edinburgh, Scotland

The National Trust for Scotland has stood as a guardian of Scottish heritage, caring for and promoting Scotland's natural and cultural treasures since 1931. As the largest membership organisation in Scotland, it ensures the preservation and accessibility of the nation’s historical sites and collections.

Following the success of our work together publishing the incredible collection of The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Cogapp and The National Trust for Scotland have partnered to deliver the Trust's digital ambitions over the coming years.

The Trust's digital estate has all the associated complexities that would be expected of a modern membership organisation. With half a million members, making millions of visits, to hundreds of places under the stewardship of the Trust, it's imperative that the systems and processes that underpin the organisation, are supported and evolve as the Trust's strategic aims are delivered over time.

Cogapp's years of experience delivering landmark projects for some of the most recognisable visitor serving organisations in the world ensured a seamless handover from the incumbent agency.

Technical

Cogapp were able to probe, review, and in turn, make recommendations to improve and enhance how the Craft CMS website is managed from a technical point of view. We have tailored our tried-and-tested development processes to the Trust, ensuring that existing best practice within the Trust is maintained alongside new approaches to delivery from our side.

UX and Design

Our UX and design specialists have performed their own checks on areas including accessibility, user journeys, as well as brand consistency, and design processes. Again our work here ensured that the Trust's processes were respected, and our work has further solidified the site and helped refine future plans.

Delivering results for site visitors from day one

Following this onboarding phase a focus on improved site performance was identified as a priority that would also serve as a great trial run for our new collaborative working practices. The work would be broad in terms of the areas of the site to be interacted with, it would have a clear means of tracking success, and it would improve every single site visitor's experience.

  • Homepage: 80% performance increase
  • Places search: 40% performance increase
  • A place page: 75% performance increase

Having instituted improved processes and building some great relationships with stakeholders, Cogapp is now delivering value each and every week for the Trust. With this working relationship in place we are in a position to tend to the more strategic thinking of how digital can best support the Trust's organisational strategy.

We look forward to working with the Trust over the coming years as they deliver their crucial work in the run up to the organisation's centenary.
